Island News is published by Island Press, a division of Hearst Magazines, Inc. The first issue was published on Nov. 24, 1931. The title changed to the Stroller’s Weekly, later revised to become the Island News Professional, and Douglas Island News, later edited by H. B. Selby & E. S. Stevens. The name was not used until March 3, 1933 when the last edition was released.
Island News Professional brought several new writers to Alaska to write about business on the islands and the surrounding regions. The pages also included travel and news columns and a sports section that was newly added, a mining report, a feature story on the Kenai Fjords National Park, an island weather report, a new feature on the Kenai Wildlife Park, a cultural calendar and a wildlife report and mining reports. Another important addition was local obituaries. The obituaries were listed alphabetically under each city in this issue. This helped readers to find the correct information quicker. These were split into two sections that included the Commercial Business section, which dealt with the owners of businesses and their businesses and the Employment and Training section, which was created to keep readers informed of local job openings. The section for business was meant to provide job opening details and advertisements. The employment section featured a classified ad listing every type of job available that included construction, fishing, general contractoring, cleaning, landscaping and any other trade. There are also listings of employers looking for workers as well as a directory of phone numbers that lists the phone numbers and names of businesses.
