So you have seen hundreds, even thousands of pictures of Rat Rods and you have had enough of ideas and you decide to build what you want in a Rat Rod. Here’s a couple of ways to get some ideas flowing for your Rat Rod.
The reason it is called “spray transfer” is because that is how the molten metal is transferred from the arc to the puddle. Fine droplets of molten metal spray into the puddle and that is what makes the humming sound that is so distinct.
A company that can do their own sheet Metal fabrication Melbourne and installation is also a plus. This will ensure that a consistently quality job is done and will help to keep costs down.
MIG welding is what is considered a semi-automatic welding process. Its main appeal is fast production and ease of use. MIG welding is typically used in factories, fabrication shops, and automotive manufacturing. The equipment can be complicated to set-up, but once things are in place, it is a breeze to operate. The most commonly MIG welded metals are steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
Engines and Transmissions are readily available. If you want to be able to drive your Rat Rod year round, there is nothing wrong with aftermarket fuel injection. Just disguise it a bit so the wiring is not so obvious. Use some metal conduit or other sheathing to run wires through. Hide computers and electronics under the dash. Electronic transmissions are not readily spotted as they sit under your ride.
So for general fabrication, short circuit mig is the way to go because general fabrication requires welding in all positions as well as all thicknesses of steel… all the way from thin sheet metal thickness, up the 1/2″ thick and even thicker.
If you want to utilize spray transfer in your shop but don’t want a separate gas mixture, get a cylinder of 85/15 argon/co2. This mixture works well for both so if you have a mig welding machine big enough to handle the high welding currents used with spray mig, all you will need to do is adjust the voltage and wire speed and you will be spraying like a champ.
