The commitment of TPF members and their associates in Fayetteville will surely result in adoption of Thomas Paine Day in Arkansas. After all, Rep. Smith's Bill received a clear majority of votes, 46 yes and only 20 no votes. A majority, 51, of the whole 100-member legislature is required, however, so the Bill failed -- this time around. Thirty-four legislators did not vote at all -- it can be hoped that at least five of them will be persuaded to vote yes in the next attempt. TPF member Jack Makens is the spearhead, holding forth at tables at the Farmers Market, speaking before various groups, and arranging Paine birthday dinners. Cheryl Cerell, also of TPF, is likewise very active, and further, she has sent numerous TPF gift memberships to friends and family all around the country.  Great way for TPF to reach out!
